Friday Night Film Series: The Red Shoes
Not Rated (1948) 133 mins. 60th Anniversary! Art as vocation; art as a sacred calling; art as the purpose of life. Michael
Powell and Emeric Pressburger created an iconic classic that is a feast for
the senses: cinematography, music, acting and ballet are combined to make a
magnificent and unforgettable cinematic experience. A beautifully
choreographed story within a story awash with vibrant color, drawing on a
story from Hans Christian Andersen with echoes of Faust, Nijinsky, and
Diaghilev, The Red Shoes explores the tension between the transitory nature
of human relations and the timelessness of art. Says Roger Ebert, "…the film
is voluptuous in its beauty and passionate in its storytelling. You don't
watch it, you bathe in it! A stunning masterpiece!"

Friday Night Film Series: Hallam Foe
Rated "R" (2007) 95 mins. Northern New England premier! Director David Mackenzie's award winning adaptation of Peter Jinks novel
filmed in Scotland follows Hallam Foe, a troubled young man who has a talent
for spying on people that reveals his darkest fears - and his most peculiar
desires. Driven to expose what he thinks to be the true cause of his mother's
death, he instead finds himself searching the rooftops of Edinburgh for love.
Years after his success in Billy Elliott, Jamie Bell brings
tremendous depth as well as rooftop athleticism to his character in an
outstanding performance as young Hallam. Hailed by The Guardian as "…quirky, disturbing,
funny, interesting, brave, thought-provoking, consistently well-shot, the
film features a choice collection of Scottish indie music including Franz
Ferdinand, Sons and Daughters, and Orange Juice among others."

Friday Night Film Series: The Mirror
Not Rated (1975) 108 mins. Says The New Yorker, "…Andrei Tarkovsky's masterpiece is his purest and most private achievement. With its interleaved
fragments of childhood and later life, switches in texture and color, and
competing elemental outbursts of water and fire, the result should by rights
be impenetrable; likewise, the fact that the narrator's mother and wife are
played by the same actress seems at once bewildering and entirely apt. The
smallest details (a stammering child, the wrinkle in the turned page of a
book) stick like burrs, and we are left to wonder if any director has delved
with more modesty and honesty into the heartbreak of the past. Pure visual
poetry, there is no comparison between this and any other film." In Russian
and Spanish with English subtitles.
