Landscape Seminar Series: Imitating Nature's Design

Creating Healthy and Sustainable Landscapes Where You Live

Whether you design or build landscapes professionally or simply enjoy them, NHTI's new seminar series provides a holistic approach to creating healthy, sustainable landscapes. This series of three seminars helps professionals and enthusiasts alike develop the skills and confidence to create energy efficient, ecologically diverse, environmentally healthy and aesthetically pleasing landscapes in municipal, residential or commercial settings. Authors of Integrated Landscaping: Following Nature's Lead, the instructors focus on best practices of integrated landscaping, treating each site as a system of plant and animal communities, and taking you through the cycle of the year that unveils a holistic view. Each of these non-credit seminars complements the others and can be taken as a series or alone. Topics are:

  • From the Ground Up: Laying the Foundation
    This session will focus on the importance of assessing your site, taking stock of existing conditions, knowing your soil, attracting life to the soil and care of newly established plantings.

  • Creating the Design: A Livable, Healthy and Ecologically Sound Approach
    This session explains explores how to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional landscape that is also low maintenance and environmentally sound. This sustainable approach can be achieved by understanding and implementing concepts that work in nature.

  • Making the Design a Reality: Putting your Ideas to Work
    The design is only successful if well implemented and cared forcorrectly, the final step in creating a sustainable landscape. This session will explain the process of making the design a reality by covering topics such as: choosing plants to create plant systems, creating diverse habitats, working with natural succession, proper plant installation, and seasonal care and maintenance.
